Doors Open Day at King's Buildings

On Saturday 28th September 2019, visitors can find examples of architectural developments across the King’s Buildings campus and discover more through our information panels.

Additionally, the whole family can explore our cutting-edge research through a variety of interactive activities (including a Treasure Hunt) and lab tours, and maybe try ice-cream freshly made with liquid nitrogen...

The Cockburn Museum, housed in the Grant Institute, holds an extensive collection of geological specimens and historical objects which reflect Edinburgh's prominent position within the geological sciences. A variety of activities, suitable for all ages, explore topics from fossils to volcanoes.

Joseph Black, School of Chemistry

The oldest building on campus, it is named after Black (1728–1799), an early Professor of Chemistry at Edinburgh, who discovered carbon dioxide and latent heat. Visitors can tour the building including our stunning new social space incorporating the School of Chemistry museum, and family drop-in activities (suitable for all ages) let you explore our research and meet our chemists.

Roger Land Building, School of Biological Sciences

The architect, Sir Basil Spence, is best known for his modern redesign of Coventry Cathedral. After being the base for several different institutes since the 1960s, the Roger Land Building has recently been renovated to house researchers from our School of Biological Sciences, who will be present to engage visitors with interactive activities and displays based on our exciting research.

Completed in 2014, the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility is the world’s most sophisticated onshore laboratory for replicating ocean conditions and testing ocean technologies. Consequently, the facility is much in demand by industry and researchers from across the globe helps maintain Scotland’s position at the forefront of clean ocean energy research, development and innovation.

Natural History Collection at the Ashworth labs

Built in the late 1920s, the Ashworth Laboratories now house part of the ever-expanding School of Biological Sciences, as well as the Ashworth Natural History Collection. Visitors will see a large variety of vertebrate and invertebrate specimens including dolphin, elephant seal, and anteater samples.

This category B-listed building was opened in 1932 by Prime Minister Ramsay Macdonald, and is now home to our School of Engineering. Visitors can explore a timeline of pioneering alumni from the School’s history, get behind-the-scenes insights into student projects including HYPED, and try their hand at flying drones on our simulator.
