You will get training in theoretical contents, but you will also be able to learn how to transfer this background knowledge into real world applications. Throughout the academic year there are a variety of postgraduate community events that students are able to attend and get involved with including: careers events research seminars MathSoc events staff-student social events e.g. board game nights and the annual Maths ceilidh Our MSc students also have exclusive use of the MScHub in the James Clerk Maxwell Building. The MScHub provides a space to socialise and study, and is equipped with a kitchen and coffee machine. Opportunites for MSc students There are lots of ways for MSc students to get involved with the School's industry and external engagement activities during their studies: The annual MSc challenge in flexible learning week (semester 2), allows MSc students to collaborate with students from other academic schools to solve an interdisciplinary problem set by an external industrial partner. Previous partners have included Edinburgh Airport and Saxavord UK Spaceport. Weekly Employability Tuesday sessions offer opportunities for students to engage with guests from industry (many of whom are Edinburgh alumni), as well offer support for e.g. writing PhD applications, CV workshops, interview/assessment centre prep, etc. MSc students can become student ambassadors and be paid for representing the School and university at various events. MSc students can join the Maths Outreach Team, engaging the local community and communicating maths in easily-accessible ways e.g. through local science festivals, school workshops, etc. What is it really like to study here? This campus has over 100 years of scientific history and is the centre of the College of Science and Engineering. There are a variety of different teaching and learning spaces in these buildings including: interactive lecture theatres well-equipped teaching studios group study spaces computer laboratories MScHub - a space for our MSc students to socialise and study together The King's Buildings campus is also home to the Kenneth and Noreen Murray Library and The Nucleus, a new shared learning, teaching and social space which opened in 2023.
