Here in the School of Biological Sciences postgraduate students are an important part of our community About our School The School of Biological Sciences has one of the largest concentrations of biologists in the United Kingdom, with a wide range of disciplines and around 150 new MSc students enrolled each year. Our teaching is based upon our phenomenal research strengths, meaning students are taught by scientists of international repute. This leads to some great opportunities for our students to gain new knowledge and skills from teaching in class as well as through self-driven learning such as projects, practicals and field work. These skills equip our students to go on and thrive in whatever they choose to do after University. Welcome from Dr Jacob Moorad, the Associate Director of Teaching for our Taught Masters Programmes Dr Jacob Moorad welcomes prospective students to the Taught Masters Programmes Why Biological Sciences at Edinburgh? We're ranked in the UK's top 5 universities and the world's top 20 universities for biological sciences in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023. We are ranked fifth in the UK, and top ranked in Scotland, for the quality and breadth of our research, by Times Higher Education - based on the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. 94% of our research activity was classed as ‘world-leading’ and 'internationally excellent'. As one of the largest Biological Sciences departments in the UK we have around 140 research groups, all carrying out world class research in a variety of areas. The academics from these research groups are who teach on our courses and there are lots of opportunities to learn from them, including completing a dissertation as part of your Taught Masters degree. Postgraduate teaching takes every advantage of our School’s expertise to give you outstanding opportunities to study within your chosen field, from programmes taught at the world-famous Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to those that develop biofuels and new medicines. Our students can be found discovering how to develop new products for human and animal health, or applying the latest engineering principles to the exploration of biological networks. Student Opportunities Your time as a student here in Edinburgh is more than your classes and studies. We'll encourage you to take part in activities that we hope will enrich your time with us and help you get to know the others on your programme as well as staff. This could include attending a ceilidh (Scottish dance), joining a society or participating in sports.
