Staff Awards and Celebration Event 

Join us to celebrate the incredible work of College of Science and Engineering staff at our very first Staff Awards.

The Staff Awards are a way for us to celebrate the fantastic work of our staff and also to say a collective thank you for all your hard work over the past year. 

The Celebration Event will be held at the Oak Lecture Theatre at The Nucleus Building, on 5 December. More details and tickets will be available later in the year.

Award categories

This award celebrates an individual or team who has made a difference to the student experience at any stage of the application or study lifecycle. It celebrates those who provide support for applicants or students that have made a meaningful impact on the student experience. 

Nomination criteria: 

  • Provides consistently excellent support to students or applicants, such as easing application processes, welcoming students, teaching, careers, accommodation, or campus life   
  • Champions student welfare and wellbeing  
  • Improves opportunities for students (such as careers, travel, volunteering, social, or funding)  
  • Improves student spaces or accommodation   
  • Makes the College a fun place to study and live  
  • Values, champions and includes student voices in decision making  

This award celebrates an individual or a team who has positively impacted the staff experience and helps to make the College a better place to work. It celebrates staff whose daily actions or initiatives strive to benefit the staff experience, such as creating better working practices or improved staff wellbeing.  

Nomination criteria:  

Describe an initiative or everyday actions that improve staff wellbeing or better working practice. What difference have they made?

Examples:  

  • recognises staff contribution and makes people feel valued  
  • addresses challenges in staff working practices, such as spaces or resources 
  • leads an activity, event or programme that enhances staff wellbeing 
  • makes the College a better place to work  
  • improves our facilities (e.g. sports/physical space/catering)  
  • fosters a sense of College community  
  • makes the campus more fun for staff  
  • improves ways of working across a unit or the College  

This award celebrates an individual or team who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to inclusion. The award recognises those who foster a sense of belonging by creating a community where everyone feels valued and respected.   

Nomination criteria:  

What has this person or team done to make people more included?  What difference have they made? 

Examples:  

  • fosters an inclusive environment, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued
  • creates a sense of belonging for all members of our community  
  • makes the workplace more accessible to individuals with disabilities, ensuring equal opportunities for all  
  • promotes equality and celebrate diversity, including gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, and socio-economic background  

This award celebrates a team or group of people in the College who work together in a supportive and inspiring way to reach their goals. The award recognises a team who embodies good team values in order to succeed.  

Nomination criteria:  

How does this team embody good team values to achieve success? What difference have they made? 

Examples:  

  • Shows appreciation for each other and values each member of the team  
  • Works with positivity and enthusiasm   
  • Collaborates well within the team and with other groups   
  • Achieves and celebrates success  
  • Inspires others and shares best practice   

This award celebrates an individual or group of people whose initiatives or behaviours seek to improve research culture and champion best practice, in line with the Research Cultures Action Plan.  

Nomination criteria:  

Explain how this person or team demonstrate outstanding research culture. What difference have they made? 

Examples:  

  • Works to improve career pathway and progression  
  • Provides targeted support for early career researchers  
  • Promotes responsible research practice   
  • Shows commitment to openness   
  • Shows exemplary ethical practice  
  • Builds communication and engagement with others into their research  
  • Champions and demonstrates excellent research governance and data practices  

This award celebrates an individual or group of people whose initiatives or behaviours aim to improve sustainability across College teaching, research, operations and on campus.  

Nomination criteria:  

What has this person or team done to make our College more sustainable? What difference have they made? 

Examples:   

  • Works to reduce waste or carbon footprint of College activities  
  • Drives forward sustainable approaches to work  
  • Improves or promotes sustainable travel   
  • Improves understanding of sustainability with students and staff  
  • Champions the benefits of sustainable approaches and encourages others to act or work more sustainably
