Art

All about the artwork you can find in and around the Nucleus Building and King's Buildings.

Artwork at the Nucleus Building

At the Nucleus we showcase artwork by students and other artists which highlights College research. Displays are intended to be temporary, to maintain the vibrancy of the building and its users. We are open to displaying one off pieces, or exhibitions of multiple artworks and have a range of suitable spaces available.

To discuss a proposal, please contact nucleus.bookings@ed.ac.uk.

We recently displayed an exhibition of art arising from a collaboration between the School of Physics & Astronomy and the Edinburgh College of Art on the first floor outside the Larch lecture theatre. This has since changed to display a Neuroscience/art collaboration, and there is another display coming soon to this space, which is chemistry-focused. We have been loaned artworks by four different artists who graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art in 2023, and these will be refreshed over the summer with works from this year’s graduates. We also have a collection of stories of trailblazing University of Edinburgh alumni, ‘Women in Science from the 19th and 20th Century’.

On the ground floor, we are displaying a selection of photographs celebrating the work of our technicians and their contribution to our teaching and research. The photos feature the winners of the Technicians’ Image Competition (below).

Ideas: King's Buildings Centenary Art Commission

As part of a programme of celebratory events to mark The King’s Building campus centenary, the College of Science and Engineering commissioned a permanent and ambitious work of art by the internationally renowned artist Katie Paterson.

The work, 'Ideas' (2021) takes the form of one hundred three-line texts cut in stainless steel (each an ‘Idea’), that are situated in a variety of locations in and around the King's Buildings campus.
